Accessibility Assessment

Summary

Australian Web Accessibility (AWA) offers detailed Accessibility reports for websites who are currently deemed as not accessible. These reports details the results of usability testing conducted on websites.

The goal of the testing is to identify problem areas and define suggestions to enhance the usability of websites. AWA accessibility reports contain specific recommendations for enhancing the usability in navigation, search, content, and accessibility, among other areas.

How we structure the report

The AWA Accessibility assessment is split into two main sections, website usability and technical assessment.

Website usability Assessment

In this section of the Accessibility assessment we use several accessibility tools to report details of your websites performance according to Australian website content accessibility guidelines. Recommendations are provided where the website does not pass a particular guideline. The aspects of your website that we check according to Australian web standards are:

  • 1.1 Text Alternatives
  • 1.2 Time-Based Media
  • 1.3 Adaptability
  • 1.4 distinguishability
  • 2.1 Keyboard Accessibility
  • 2.2 Enough time left for users to read content
  • 2.3 Seizures
  • 2.4 Navigation
  • 3.1 Readable
  • 3.2 Predictable
  • 3.3 Input Assistance

Technical assessment

The technical attributes of the website have a large influence on the site’s overall usability because they can affect how the site will appear and behave under different conditions. A website that is technically clean and adherent to standards will perform more consistently across the spectrum of possible user hardware and software configurations. The technical aspects of your website that we check are:

  • Web folder structures
  • Appropriate file naming conventions
  • Javascript functions
  • HTML structiral coding
  • CSS locations
  • Website validation according to W3C standards for CSS & HTML coding
  • Correct heading hierachies throughout site pages

Australian Web Accessibility

Web accessibility is the inclusive practice of ensuring there are no barriers that prevent interaction with, or access to, websites on the World Wide Web by people with physical disabilities, situational disabilities, and socio-economic restrictions on bandwidth and speed. When sites are correctly designed, developed and edited, generally all users have equal access to information and functionality.
"The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect."
Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the World Wide Web
